Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Interior

If you’re considering making the switch to the EV lifestyle, you likely have some questions about electrified vehicle technology and how it works. “Do electric cars use oil?” is one of the most frequently asked, and the answer is no, EVs don’t require motor oil because they do not have internal combustion engines. That said, EVs do need a few other types of fluids. The Liberty GMC, Inc. service team discusses them all below, as well as the key parts of an EV power plant.

Types of Fluids Needed for Electric Vehicles

Do electric cars need oil? While you won’t ever need to schedule an electric car oil change, you will need to change other essential vehicle fluids to keep your EV running smoothly on Phoenix and Tempe streets, including:

  • Brake Fluid – This fluid lubricates the components of your brake system to minimize friction and deliver safe, reliable braking performance.
  • Coolant -Radiator coolant prevents the battery and other vehicle systems from overheating.
  • Transmission Fluid -Transmission fluid protects your EV gears and helps them work more effectively. Remember: Your EV doesn’t have a traditional engine, so you won’t need an electric car oil change, but it does have a transmission.

Parts of an Electric Vehicle

Now that you know that you can answer the question, “Do electric cars use oil?”, let’s dive into the key components of your EV. This will help you understand how your vehicle works so you can keep it well-maintained for the roads of Glendale and beyond.

Electric cars like the Hummer EV rely on an electric motor, which converts battery current into motion. Magnets beside the motor produce torque by creating a magnetic field around the motor and churning it. You need to keep the battery adequately charged so there is enough current to generate motion and get you where you need to go.

Here are the most crucial parts of an EV system:

  • Battery – The battery stores the electricity the motors need.
  • Charging Ports – These external chargers are responsible for charging your EV battery.
  • DC-DC Converter – As its name implies, this converter changes high-voltage direct current (DC) power from the battery into the low-voltage DC power needed to propel the EV.
  • Onboard Charger – The onboard charger takes the external charge from a charging port and changes it into DC power.
  • Thermal System – The thermal system maintains consistent temperatures and prevents overheating.
  • Traction Motors – Traction motors power the wheels.
