What Is the Hummer CrabWalk?

The Hummer CrabWalk Mode uses a four-wheel steering function that turns the wheels in the same direction all at once. Then, the tires can move the pickup in a diagonal direction without swinging the front or back ends out of alignment which typically happens with two-wheel steering in Glendale. 

The overall goal of the Hummer CrabWalk Mode is to make it easier to get in and out of tight spaces. Imagine heading to an offroading destination but a couple of boulders or huge trees make it difficult to traverse the terrain. Perhaps two vehicles got a little too close when parallel parking in Tempe. These situations are when Hummer CrabWalk shines.

How Does Hummer CrabWalk Work?

Hummer EV CrabWalk works when the vehicle is stationary or going less than 1.2 mph. Then, all four wheels pivot in the same direction by up to 10 degrees. Then, the wheels turn to move the vehicle a few feet diagonally. 

This keeps the driver from needing to perform a multi-point turn to get around an obstacle, especially when it might cause a collision with stationary objects. When you engage CrabWalk Mode, the vehicle’s computer adjusts the wheels automatically and uses cameras to gauge how to maneuver the vehicle out of the tight spot.

How to Turn On Hummer CrabWalk

Follow these steps to engage Hummer CrabWalk Mode:

1. Make sure your GMC Hummer pickup is stationary or going 1.2 mph or less.
2. Center the steering wheel so that all four wheels are in line with the rest of the vehicle.
3. Find the Driver Mode Control dial on the center console.
4. Hold down the 4-Wheel Steer button on the left side (9 o’clock) of the Driver Mode Control dial for 6 seconds or until the CrabWalk animation on the central infotainment screen is complete.
5. Release the button.
6. Look for the HD Surround Vision to appear on the central infotainment screen. 
7. See the orange crab symbol in the lower right corner of the Driver Display to confirm CrabWalk is engaged.

At this point, you can drive as fast as 20 mph in Hummer CrabWalk Mode. Any speeds above 20 mph will cause the wheels to turn at less of an angle. 

How to Turn Off Hummer CrabWalk Mode

You can disengage Hummer CrabWalk Mode one of two ways:

1. Center the steering wheel and keep your vehicle still. Then, push the 4-Wheel Steering icon on the Driver Mode Selector.
2. Drive above 25 mph for 10 seconds. Your vehicle will automatically disengage CrabWalk Mode.

Some advanced functions won’t work when Hummer CrabWalk mode is engaged, such as Lane Keep Assist, Transparent Trailer, Articulation Angle Indicator, and Jackknife Alert.
